ÍRSKY VLKODAV
Pôvod: Veľmi staré plemeno, ktorého predchodcov si údajne chovali Íri už v časoch pred našim letopočtom. Boli to nezvyčajne veľké psy, určené na lov vlkov, patrili medzi obľúbencov írskych kráľov. V priebehu 18. storočia prakticky vyhynuli. Jeho moderná podoba je zásluhou istého kapitána Granta, ktorý po roku 1860 zhromaždil posledné zvyšky plemena a pomocou kríženia s mastifom, s nemeckou dogou, s ruským chrtom a vari aj s ďalšími plemenami utvoril súčasného írskeho vlkodava.
Popis: Najväčší pes sveta, mohutný a svalnatý, ale mu nechýba ani elegancia chrtov. Hlava dlhá, lebka nie veľmi široká, ňucháč dlhý a mierne zašpicatený. Oči tmavé, s láskavým výrazom. Uši malé, zložené dozadu. Krk dlhší, veľmi mocný a svalnatý, klenutý, bez laloka. Telo s hlbokým hrudníkom, širokými prsiami, dlhším chrbtom a klenutými bedrami. Nohy hrubé, rovné, svalnaté, laby veľké a guľaté. Chvost dlhý, primerane hrubý, zľahka zahnutý. Srsť drsná a tvrdá, o čosi dlhšia nad očami a na spodnej čeľusti. Farba najčastejšie sivá, ale aj plavá, červená, čierna, čisto biela, pruhovaná. Veľkosť: Kohútiková výška psa 81-86 cm, suky nad 71 cm. Hmotnosť psov nad 54,5 kg, súk nad 40,5 kg.
Charakteristika: Pokojný, vyrovnaný a trpezlivý pes nevtieravých spôsobov. K ľuďom je vľúdny, k deťom priateľský, pánovi je hlboko oddaný. Jeho výchova nie je ťažká.
Zvláštne nároky: S ohľadom na veľkosť je toto plemeno nezvyčajne náročné na priestor, ale aj na pohyb a na potravu.
Využitie: Vynikajúci spoločník. Na dostihoch sa zjavuje iba zriedkavo.
Výskyt: Jeho popularita v ostatných rokoch rýchlo stúpa. Ročne sa u nás odchováva viac ako sto šteniec.
Možná zámena: So škótskym jelením psom, ktorý vyzerá "chrtovitejšie", je menší, ľahší a má klenutý chrbát.
